Guangzhou Mayor Wan Qingliang met Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, in Guangzhou last week to discuss ideas for a low-carbon economy and the Guangzhou Asian Games. Guangzhou Vice-Mayor Chen Mingde and Xie Xiaodan, Secretary General of Guangzhou Municipal Government also attended the meeting.
"It is the 25th anniversary of the friendships between our two cities and Guangzhou will hold the Asian Games this year, said Wan in a speech to his Canadian counterparts. Your visiting at this time is very kind. It is the best support on our preparation for the Asian Games, and it will surely promote the international friendly relations between our two cities," said Wan.
Robertson praised Guangzhou's preparation for the Asian Games and said that it shows Guangzhou is an international metropolis. "Vancouver and Guangzhou both devoted to developing a low-carbon economy, said Robertson. Vancouver is now becoming the global centre of the world low-carbon industry. And it is a great pleasure to cooperate with Guangzhou on establishing a low-carbon economy, Robertson added.
Both mayors then signed an "Environment Protection and Green Economy Memorandum of Understanding" signaling that both cities are now resolved to cooperate on projects of clean power sources.
