The three west Pearl River Delta cities Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen are of great potential and there are business opportunities for British companies all across the Pearl River Delta (PRD), said the new British Consul-General in Guangzhou Alastair Morgan, who led a business mission to visit these three cities from March 28 to 30.

The mission is a follow up of the west PRD tour organized by the Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office last June. The 13 British companies in this mission are from different sectors, such as infrastructure and transport, construction and design, and professional services. They held workshops with mayors and related governmental departments of the three visited cities.

Morgan told the newsgd.com that all these cities are of great potential and the improvements in the infrastructure around the PRD, including the high speed train to Guangzhou and the road construction, means the increasing new opportunities for business.

All the companies on the mission are interested in doing business in these cities, said Morgan. The architecture firm called Sparch has launched an architectural project in Zhongshan, and ARUP is involved in the projects linked to the bridge connecting Zhuhai and Macao. For the service companies, Cambridge ESOL, which does the language testing for Universities in UK, said Jiangmen is their biggest source of applicants, even bigger than Guangzhou.

Fosroc, a world class chemical solution provider to the construction industry, said they are very confident and there were new opportunities for them. In other area, Morgan said Britain has a manufacturing company and they are now sourcing from China including the west PRD.

Nicky Chow, Director of Opfer Logan Architects (UK), who joined the west PRD mission, said all these three cities have great potential for business opportunities, especially for European based architectural design consultancies. We would certainly welcome opportunities of cooperation with companies in China and are confident that the outcome would enhance China's ever-growing stature in the world and be successful and mutually beneficial."

Whitney Liu from Fosroc said they had learnt a lot from the PRD visit. The three cities, each presenting its advantages, offer great potential for business opportunities. Zhongshan has mapped out its positioning and industrial Zone Plan while Zhuhai makes full use of the Delta Bridge and General Aviation Manufacturing Base.

Jiangmen, which is much less well-know than Zhongshan and Zhuhai, however, are displaying great potential by attracting large projects and enterprises. Whitney said they are greatly impressed by the large projects in the PRD and their company is willing to launch cooperation projects in Jiangmen and Zhuhai.

Tom Carver from Wragge & Co, a major UK law firm, said the PRD offer many opportunities for British enterprises to invest and their company are establishing an intellectual Property Office in Zhongshan.
