Starting July 1, anonymous access to the Internet will be banned in nearly one thousand internet bars in Guangzhou. To access the Internet, Chinese mainland citizens shall now have to swipe their ID cards through an ID-card scanner and foreign customers must present a valid identification document. Registration data shall be kept so as to facilitate police surveillance.
Although some owners of internet cafes complain that the real-name system is bad for business, they are applying the new regulations meant to create a safer and cleaner environment.
