A driver suspected of shooting and killing two police officers while evading a traffic check on a Guangdong highway was captured by police in neighboring Fujian Province on Thursday afternoon (July 8).
Police seized the suspect at a hotel in Xiamen City. He was carrying a pistol and the police ID cards of the two victims, Guangdong police said Thursday. The suspect's identity was not disclosed.
The arrest came one day after more than 1,000 Guangdong police launched a search for the suspect.
The driver of a Toyota Crown sedan shot Zhou Xilai, a captain with Jieyang City's traffic police squad, and his colleague Huang Weijiang at 11:50 p.m. Monday night on the Huilai County section of the Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway, the Guangzhou Daily reported.
The newspaper cited Jieyang police as saying that the officers had attempted to stop the driver as the sedan was unlicensed.
About 10 minutes later, patrol staff called police after seeing the two officers lying in a pool of blood. Zhou, 44, was shot four times, once in the head, and Huang, 34, was shot twice, once in the heart.
