Hot on the heels of Conson, a third tropical storm, Chanthu, is expected to bring heavy rain and lower temperatures over the next few days.

Chanthu intensified into a tropical storm Monday evening and was situated 540 kilometers south-southeast of Shenzhen at 2 p.m. yesterday (July 20).

The storm is expected to make landfall overnight Wednesday on the Guangdong coast to the west of the mouth of the Pearl River, 150-250 kilometers from Shenzhen.

Packing maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometers per hour near the center, the storm is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometers per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

Although Chanthu was not as strong as Conson, it would bring more rain as it was closer to Shenzhen than Conson, which made landfall in Hainan on July 16, Shenzhen's meteorological observatory said yesterday.

The storm is expected to make landfall overnight Wednesday on the Guangdong coast to the west of the mouth of the Pearl River, 150-250 kilometers from Shenzhen, the observatory said.

Shenzhen issued a yellow hot weather alert Monday and the maximum temperature reached 37.3 degrees Celsius in Dapeng, Longgang District, yesterday.

The temperatures in most parts of Shenzhen was above 35 degrees yesterday.

Chanthu was contributed by Cambodia and is the name of a flower. This name was last used in 2004.
