The trip from downtown Shenzhen to Longgang is expected to be cut by 10 minutes after the Northern Passage opened in Longgang yesterday (July 19).

The 13 km road, connecting Shuiguan Expressway and Hengping Road at the Longgang Toll Gate, will also cut the travel time from Futian to Pingshan New Zone from about hour to 25 minutes. The northern end of the road connects with Fenggang Township in Dongguan City.

Five flyovers along the expressway lead to other expressways such as Huiyan Expressway and Shenhui Road, for access to Pingdi in Pingshan, Huizhou and Dongguan. The two-way six-lane road has a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

The 1.5-billion-yuan (220 million USD) project will also serve the Universiade to be held in Longgang in 2011.

It will also relieve traffic on Shenhui Road and in downtown Longgang.

Trucks to the Yantian port area will be diverted on the eve of the Universiade after restrictions are imposed on Huangge Road and Shenhui Road.

The road will facilitate the development of the Pingxinqing industrial cooperation demonstration zone jointly developed by Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou, according to the Longgang public works bureau.

The zone occupies 55 square kilometers in areas bordering Pingshan in Longgang, Xinxu Township in Huizhou and Qingxi Township in Dongguan.

It is expected to generate an output value of more than 100 billion RMB by 2020.
