Heavy downpours and lightning struck Shenzhen yesterday (July 28), leaving one person dead and another missing, the city's flood control authority said.

The victim was swept away by a swollen river in Pingshan New Zone while another person went missing in a separate accident, the authority said, without giving further details.

The city reported an average rainfall of 75 millimeters between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. yesterday. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Yougan Bay in Longgang District, at 226 millimeters.

It poured solidly for three hours across Futian, Luohu and Longgang throughout the morning, bringing 100 millimeters of rain to the districts. Ninety areas of the city reported flooding.

A landslide on Yansan Road near OCT East Tea Stream Valley engulfed a car, leaving seven passengers injured.

Shenzhen Metro Line 1 halted for half an hour between 8 and 9 a.m. owing to problems caused by the heavy rains.

The city's meteorological observatory yesterday saw the heaviest rain Shenzhen had experienced this year, which added 20 million cubic meters of water to reservoirs.

The city was expected to see reduced rainfall today and tomorrow.
