More service facilities, such as gas stations, information boards and toilets, would be built on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, the provincial transport authority said Tuesday (Aug 10).
The authority had already asked Guangshen Expressway Co. Ltd. to upgrade facilities on the expressway, one of the busiest highways in the country, yesterday's Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
A Guangzhou driver, Zhao Shaohua, took legal action against the expressway company last Friday for not providing a gas station on the road.
According to the provincial authority, there had been a gas station on the Dongguan section, but it was demolished in May to make way for the construction of a branch road. New service stations were still under construction, the authority said. "Building service stations requires a lot of procedures, so it will take a little more time and we've already asked Guangshen Expressway Co. to speed up construction and adopt measures to solve drivers' problems," an unnamed transport official said.
Guangshen Expressway officials said they had increased spending to upgrade facilities on the road and had also established a service squad to take gasoline to drivers on the road. More temporary gas stations and toilets would be planned, the officials said.
The Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway had an average daily traffic flow of 361,300 vehicles in the first half of the year, a new record. The daily average traffic flow during the Spring Festival transport season this year reached 336,000 vehicles, compared to 175,000 vehicles in the same period in 2004.
