Ten medical staff from Shenzhen's centers for disease control and prevention were sent to Zhouqu County in Gansu Province yesterday (Aug 11) for disinfection and epidemic disease prevention, said Zhang Dan, vice director of the city's Commission of Health, Population and Family Planning.

The 10 staff members, aged between 28 and 40, had wide experience in disinfection and epidemic disease prevention, Zhang said.

They took a van carrying disinfection equipment, drugs and tents to Zhouqu and also prepared instruction manuals to teach local residents how to keep healthy in a post-disaster environment.

Zhouqu is an area designated by the Central Government for Shenzhen to help after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. The health department received a request from the Shenzhen head office in Gansu Province to send 10 health care staff to conduct disinfection work.

More health care workers could be sent to the disaster area if needed, Zhang said.

Shenzhen had donated 2 million RMB (295,400 USD) to Zhouqu by Sunday. The city had been raising money and relief supplies since Sunday and more would be sent soon, Party chief Wang Rong said Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Shenzhen Red Cross and other charity organizations have started raising money for the disaster area. Several companies donated money Monday with Tencent Inc. giving 5 million RMB for disaster relief in Zhouqu.
