Guangzhou, the host city of the 2010 Asian Games, launched a Citywide Voluntary Service Campaign at Tianhe Sports Centre on Saturday (September 11), calling on its residents to support the Games with a range of voluntary services.

On behalf of various professions, a group of bus drivers, doctors, air hostesses and cleaners read a proposal during the ceremony. Then Mr Zhang and Mr Wan walked into Tianhe Sports Centre with the representatives and cleaned the seats of the stadium.

Across Guangzhou, over 10,000 volunteers took part in the cleaning of 26 delivered Asian Games venues.
The campaign encourages Guangzhou citizens to take actions in nine areas:
1. Obey traffic rules and observe public order;
2. Sing Asian Games songs;
3. Smile at each other;
4. Clean the city;
5. Maintain civilised behaviour at tourist spots;
6. Build civilised communities;
7. Protect the environment;
8. Help with Asian Games security;
9. Learn English and sign languages.
According to the Volunteers Department of GAGOC, every Sunday from September 12 to November 7 will be the Citywide Voluntary Service Action Day and more than one million person times are expected to get involved.
Guangzhou boasts over one million registered volunteers and 1,536 voluntary service teams. According to statistics, they have spent a total of 430 million hours volunteering; every weekend, about 63,000 volunteers provide a variety of services in different parts of the city.
