Five suspects who allegedly attacked a Shenzhen police officer on duty Aug. 27 had been arrested in separate police actions in Shenzhen, Zhanjiang and Yangjiang, Guangdong Province.
The incident happened when the major suspect, Liu, driving a friend s car, had allegedly refused a roadside breath test and fled when police officer Li Weiguang was checking drivers at the intersection of Nanxin Road and Guimiao Road in Nanshan District on Aug. 27, police said yesterday.
Li chased Liu to a construction site, where Liu abandoned the car and disappeared. While Li was waiting for the car to be towed away, Liu returned claiming he wanted to check Li s identification.
Liu then attacked him and was joined by four others, police said. Li was seriously injured.
When Li climbed into his police car to try to stop the attackers from getting away, one of the attackers got out of a taxi and pulled Li out of his car and beat him unconscious.
Li was later taken to Nanshan People s Hospital, where doctors said he had 11 fractured ribs and serious head injuries. He was now in stable condition.
Police arrested one suspect 16 hours after the accident. The suspect, a native of Guangdong Province, allegedly admitted he had been involved in beating Li. Police arrested the other four suspects in separate actions in Zhanjiang and Yangjiang.
