The first train on the new Metro Line 2 rolled out of the Jiahe Wanggang Station at 6 AM on September 25, marking the official commencement of the operations of Metro Lines 2 and 8 across the Guangzhou in a south-north orientation (Jiehe Wanggang Station to Guangzhou South Station; Wangshengwei to Changgang). With the opening of the new Metro Line 2/8, passenger flows on the original Line 2 will soar from 900,000 to 1,200,000 per day. It's expected that the city's metro system handle more than 3.7 million passengers a day.
Metro Lines 2 and 8 run between Wangshengwei in the east and Changgang in the west, and between the Guangzhou New Passenger Station in the south and Jiahe in the north, linking up four of Guangzhou's administrative districts Baiyun, Yuexiu, Haizhu, and Panyu. Along the lines, there are 34 stations and two new connecting stations (Jiahe Wanggang Station, connecting to Line 3; Changgang Station, connecting to Lines 2 and 8).
Space is reserved for the planned Liushayuan Station, which will be connected to the future Guangzhou-Foshan Line Phase II. The new lines run through several residential communities and shopping districts, and are set to benefit the 1.2 million residents along the routes (750,000 residents along Line 2, and 450,000 residents along Line 8).
These new lines, together with the northern extension of Line 4, which opened on the same day, are expected to bring the average daily number of passengers on Guangzhou's metro system to 3.7 million. They will also help increase passenger flows on other lines, improve the operating efficiency of the entire metro system, and make it easier for local residents to move around.
