Mr Wang Huanqing, Director of the Volunteers Department of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC) briefed the media on the Asiad volunteer services at a press conference held in the Main Press Centre (MPC), Asian Games Town at 10:30am on November 16.

At the press conference

Volunteers present a variety of Zhiyuan Cai. Zhiyuan Cai (Zhiyuan means volunteering in Chinese) includes a variety of colourful bands which volunteers can wear as scarves, hatbands, hair bands, wristbands and waistbands as a unique symbol for the Guangzhou Asian Games volunteers, and it combines a set of fashion elements the youth adore and volunteer culture.

Director Wang introduced the recruitment, selection, promotion, training, service and management of the volunteers. Deputy Directors of the Volunteers Department Wei Guohua and An Jianguo were in attendance.

Mr Wang said the volunteer selection and promotion has 60,000 volunteers working in 53 competition venues, 11 non-competition venues, 18 training venues and 20 specialised work teams.

The Guangzhou Asian Games Volunteer Slogan, "Together, we can make it better!" is the clarion call to anyone that desires to serve.

Some 1,026 teams were sent to 120 cities in 21 countries of Asia, Europe, America, Africa and Oceania since the Guangzhou Asian Games Volunteer Messenger campaign was inaugurated on June 30, 2009. The number of participants exceeded 70,000, making it the largest non-governmental Asian Games promotional campaign.

Jacques Rogge, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) left a written inspiration for the volunteers and in his address at the Opening Ceremony of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), also hailed their work by saying "Your name card of Guangzhou will be your smile. The Asian Games can not work without you. It is your hard work, dedication and participation that will ensure the Guangzhou Asian Games a success. "
