The law division of the Guangzhou Municipal People's Congress paid a fact-finding visit on December 29 with regard to the formulation of a set of regulations on car parks.
During a briefing with the inspectors from the People's Congress, Liu Wei, deputy director of the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Committee, said that as of October 2010, there were more than 1.55 million motor vehicles and over 630,000 parking spaces in Guangzhou.
In early 2008, the municipal government formed a task force to tackle shortages of parking spaces in the city center. From 2008 to November 2010, a total of 182,833 parking spaces were added, exceeding the annual target of 50,000 more parking spaces.
