Statistics released by the Guangzhou Commodity Price Bureau (GCPB) show that, the city's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.2 percent year-on-year in 2010, 0.1 percen lower than the national average and 0.1 percent higher than the provincial average.
Guangzhou's CPI last year was 0.8 and 0.1 percent higher than that of Beijing and Shanghai, and 0.3 percen than Tianjin's and Shenzhen's.
According to GCPB officials, the increase of the city's CPI last year was attributable to two factors:
First, Guangzhou's economy continued to pick up. Its GDP last year is estimated at more than RMB 1 trillion, making Guangzhou the third city in mainland China to register annual GDP in excess of RMB 1 trillion, and the average disposable income of urban residents in the city surged 11 percent last year to hit RMB 30,659.
Second, certain agricultural products saw substantial price hikes last year.
