A Hip-hop dance team formed by 15 migrant workers in Shenzhen will perform at this year's China Central Television (CCTV) Spring Festival Gala, which will be aired Feb. 2, the Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve, CCTV said yesterday (Jan 23).
The team would perform with another grass-roots band at the gala, one of the TV station's biggest show of the year, team leader Zheng Jianfeng said.
They could not reveal details of their performance as required by the gala director, Zheng said.
The 15-member team is from Fuyong Subdistrict in Bao'an District. Most of the members, all aged around 20, are migrants working in construction and restaurants.
They were invited when they attended a CCTV program called "I want to attend the 2011 Spring Festival Gala" earlier this month, Zheng, 21, a construction worker, said.
Set up in 2008, the team has won many local prizes and national competitions. They attracted national attention in a popular talent show in Shanghai last year, being called "star migrant workers" on stage by stand-up comedian Zhou Libo.
The CCTV gala is viewed by 700 million people on Chinese New Year's Eve each year and has become an essential viewing on the day for family reunion.
