Guangzhou will increase efforts to promote social development, improve public welfare, and resolve issues of the most intense concern to the public this year, in order to enhance the sense of happiness among local residents, Mayor Wan Qingliang announced on 26 at the 24th session of the 14th Standing Committee of the Guangzhou People's Political Consultative Conference.
In the government work report for last year, Mayor Wan summed up the experience of the 10 public interest projects undertaken last year, and stated that this year, the government will reduce the expenses of Party and government operations, reception, vehicles, conferences and oversea travels, increase spending on public livelihood and social programs, and continue to implement another 10 public interest projects.
According to Mayor Wan, the 10 projects will cover various aspects of local society. They will include poverty reduction programs for residents in the city's mountainous areas, housing for needy residents, and expanded social security coverage, as well as free Internet access for a "wireless city", installation of street lamps in the countryside, and construction of more greenways. These projects are aimed at enhancing the quality of life in the city and are expected to deliver substantial benefits to local residents.
