Building a trustworthy Shenzhen: consumer council

This year's Consumers' Day on March 15 would initiate a series of monthlong activities aimed at "building a trustworthy Shenzhen to embrace the Universiade" in August, the city's market supervision administration told a press conference yesterday (March 2).

A management team had been formed involving senior officials of the market supervision administration and Shenzhen Consumer Council, as well as the city's information office.

A series of activities would be held at Lianhua Hill Park on March 15. Government offices would release information about organizations and companies involved in the Universiade and tips for potential problems.

"The Universiade is an event offering Shenzhen a perfect chance to attract domestic and international attention," said Xu Youjun, head of the administration and management team. "We should constantly improve our consumption environment and make Shenzhen Quality known to the world."

The agency will also release a list of local companies awarded China's Famous Brand last year and a list of reliable e-commerce companies in the city.

E-commerce sales in China rose 22 percent to 4.5 trillion RMB (684.7 billion USD) last year, with the number of shoppers reaching 158 million compared with 121 million in 2009, the administration cited an official industry report as saying.

However, in stark contrast to the international average percentage level of Internet shoppers 86 percent, in China it was only 27 percent, indicating China lacked a reliable online transaction environment, the meeting was told.

The administration would also organize 20 Shenzhen brands to demonstrate high-quality Shenzhen-made products and organize test and repair centers with free service.

After Consumers' Day, organizers would conduct sample tests on edible oil and leather shoes, investigate unfair clauses inserted by retailers or service providers, and initiate training in food safety standards for catering industries, food producers and consumers, the meeting was told.
