Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in China.
Migrant workers in Guangdong province may have the opportunity to fulfill their university dreams as an initiative recently launched enables them to attend free courses offered by Peking University. The registration for the project was closed yesterday (Feb.28). By 11 am yesterday, there are more than 2,000 workers applied for the selection, a quarter of which are from Dongguan.
The program called "Realizing Dreaming in Peking University 100", is a joint venture between the Communist Youth League Committee of Guangdong Province and Peking University put forward at the end of 2010. Young workers with technical secondary school education or higher can apply for the project that will select 100 candidates to take free long-distance learning courses offered by China's top university - Peking University. Those who qualify after 2.5 - 5 years' undergraduate study will acquire a certificate issued by the School of Distance Learning of Peking University.
Though the participation quota is limited, failed candidates can also fill in relevant documents and may enjoy the preferential policy of half tuition fee.
Currently, the identities of about 500 young migrant workers have been confirmed. They will take the written exams on March 12 in Dongguan Science & Technology School.
"Scores are important, but it is not the only assessment criteria", said an official from the city's Youth League Committee. Candidates work and award-winning experiences will also be taken into consideration.
