Waste segregation will be adopted in 16 sub-districts next month. According to the Interim Provisions on Municipal Solid Waste Segregation in Guangzhou, the first of its kind in China.
There are four categories of wastes, namely recyclable waste, left-over food, hazardous waste and others. Last year, waste segregation was adopted in four pilot communities of Hailongwan in Panyu District, Huangjing New City, South Wuyang of Donghu Jie in Yuexiu District and Fangcun Garden in Liwan District.
The project developed this year on a larger scale, is a bit different, as residents in communities where segregation cannot be fully implemented ,can adpot an easier approach and divide their waste into only two categories of "dry waste" and "wet waste". Reclassification will be done by the sanitation workers.
The concept of four-categories of waste segregation have been carried out in Guangwei Jie in central Guangzhou since June last year, which sets up an example for the next round of pilot communities to adopt the new waste segregation systems..
