A survey on scientific literacy of citizens conducted by the China Association for Science and Technology in 2010 shows that only 3 percent of Guangdong citizens possess basic scientific literacy, 0.03 percentage points higher than the national average level.
This figure is equivalent to the level of major developed countries and regions 20 years ago, according to the fifth full-committee meeting of the Seventh Session of the Guangdong Association of Science and Technology on March 23.
The survey launched quantitative measurements on the scientific literacy level of citizens in three aspects, namely "understanding necessary scientific knowledge," "grasping basic scientific methods," and "advocating a scientific spirit."
Respondents who passed the quantitative measurements in the three aspects were identified as people with basic scientific literacy.
