The Shenzhen Universiade Athletes Village was scheduled to open Aug. 6, a government meeting was told yesterday.

According to International University Sports Federation (FISU) regulations, the Athletes Village should open at least five days before the start of the first event of the Games, said Liang Daoxing, head of the executive office of the Universiade organizing committee.

The first Universiade event was scheduled for Aug. 11, the day before the official opening, said Liang.

The village will be run by a village committee involving 25 government departments.

Located in Longgang District, the Athletes Village had been completed. There were 28 buildings in the village with 4,997 rooms for athletes. Each room would be shared by two athletes.

The village was expected to host about 13,000 athletes and officials from more than 100 countries and regions.

The Athletes Village would be the first in Shenzhen to use an automatic garbage collection system. After the Games, the village would become part of the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology, which would be moved to Longgang District.
