A young man suffered two broken legs when he jumped from an unlicensed bus traveling at 70 kph yesterday morning.
The man, Wang, 28, a native of Guangdong Province, was receiving treatment at Henggang People's Hospital in Longgang District.
Wang and a colleague boarded the No. 868 bus from Songgang to Pingshan yesterday morning. They realized they were on an illegal bus when two strong men demanded 40 yuan (US$5.89) for the trip double the price of a regular 868 bus.
The two paid 30 yuan after bargaining with the men.
"There were 30 passengers on the bus. On the way, they forced some passengers off the bus though they hadn t reached their destinations," a witness named Zhao told the Shenzhen Daily.
When the bus approached the He'ao Tollgate on Jihe Expressway, Wang attempted to alight, but was ignored by the driver. When Wang knocked on the window to remind the driver, one of the conductors approached him and began beating and kicking him, breaking one of the bus's windows during the attack.
The man returned to Wang, demanding 2,500 yuan in compensation for the broken window, and threatening to cut off his hand if he refused.
Wang then leapt from the bus through the broken window. The bus sped off.
A driver fixing his car at the roadside helped Wang call the police. Wang's colleague, who arrived at the hospital a while later, told the Shenzhen Daily that the "conductors" had driven the passengers off the bus at the border of Danshui and Kengzi in Longgang District. The driver had covered the bus's license plates so it could not be identified, he said.
Doctors said it would cost 50,000 yuan to treat Wang's fractures and head injuries.
Police are investigating.
