At the invitation of Social Work Department of ECUST, Prof. Peishan Yang of Department of Social Work of University of Taiwan paid a visit to ECUST on December 24.
As an expert and senior academics on the elderly, Prof. Peishan Yang boasts of theoretical background with a PhD degree of social work of Columbia University and abundant practical experience after years of work on welfare for the elderly and geriatric research.
Prof. Pei-Shan Yang gave a lecture entitled Reflections on Service for Senior Victims after August 8th Flood in Taiwan , which gave a detailed introduction of the service process of Hua Shan Charity Foundation, a social welfare organization in Taiwan, after Morak floods on August 8, 2009. The lecture exemplified on how to quickly assess the needs of the affected elderly people, how to integrate their requirements, and how to clarify intervention strategies to offer continuous services. Prof. Yang also made a comparison on social service between Du JiangYan (an earth-stricken city in Si Chuan Province) service offered by ECUST social work teams and Taiwan Hua Shan Charity Foundation, pointing out that a successful disaster service need to make proper pre-trip plan of service assessment, make clear the tasks and processes, make good use of edge orientation and help colleagues to build a sense of meaningfulness. Prof. Yang also put high value on rapid response and intervention mode of ECUST and its Du JiangYan post-disaster reconstruction services.
