President's Message

There is no better testimony to a city's cultural achievement and aspirations than its architecture. Hong Kong's vibrancy is reflected in its intricate patchwork of modern buildings, assembled in a visual display of incredible intensity. A review of the buildings mentioned in the HKIA Annual Awards over the last thirty-eight years gives a vivid account of Hong Kong's transition into an international metropolis, and .In recent years, also of its contribution to the transformation of China.

Our Annual Awards rightly deserve attention, by the profession, the media and, not least, the general public. They represent the best of creativity by talented people who have built Hong Kong and are continuing to build it for a brighter future. We are greatly honoured by the many guests and friends who have come to witness this ceremony, particularly the Honourable Antony Leung, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Whose gracious presence we appreciate and take as a strong signal of official support for our profession.

Good architecture is not just the work of architects, but is dependent on the sponsorship of enlightened clients, from both public and private sectors. Likewise, the contribution of the allied professions, contractors and suppliers is essential in making buildings what they are Hence, the honours are not only awarded to architects, but to all parties who have devoted time and energy to make Hong Kong a better place to live and work in.

To the winners of the 2002 awards, I would like to offer, on behalf of the Institute, our sincere thanks and admiration. I would also like to extend our gratitude to the organisers and adjudicators, who have put in an enormous amount of hard work in the assessment of the many entries. I hope you will enjoy going round this exhibition and share with us your thoughts.
