NUPT and NYIT jointly held the Green Imagination Forum: Energy, Education and Environment from April 7 to 9, an agreeable time in the ancient city of Nanjing. Approximately 100 education experts, business elites and government officials from US and China gathered at the forum to map out creative, effective and green solutions to technological, educational, industrial and financial challenges. The forum marked a significant cooperation in energy and education between the two countries since the Copenhagen Summit.
Participants at the opening ceremony included former Mister of Education, Chair of UNESCO Executive Board and Chair of China Education Association for International Exchanges Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Association) Director Lady Barbara Judge, NYIT President Doctor Edward Guiliano, NUPT President Professor Yang Zhen, US Consulate in Shanghai Camille Purvis Dawson, Director of Jiangsu Telecommunication Administration Bureau Mr. Su Shaolin, Deputy Director of Jiangsu Department of Science and Technology Mr. Cao Suming, Deputy Director of Jiangsu Department of Education Mr. Yin Xiangwen, Vice Chairman of Jiangsu Economic and Infomatization Commission Mr. Zhang Fang, Executive Director of US Department of Energy in charge of affairs concerning China and senior expert with US Department of Transportation Nicole Porter, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Doctor Chu Junhao, and General Project Manager of the construction of 2010 Shanghai World Expo Doctor Le Yun. Vice President of NUPT Professor Huang Wei presided over the forum.
Mr. Zhang Xinsheng delivered the opening speech and wished the forum a success. He spoke of the event as a fine example set by NUPT for the green campaign. He pointed out that it takes not only technological progress but, more importantly, education to change the color of the current social economic structure from black to green . He expressed his hope for Jiangsu Province to become a national bellwether in the current green campaign as well as international exchanges.
NUPT President Professor Yang Zhen extended heart-felt welcome to experts and scholars from all over the world. He hoped that the forum would supply a platform for enhanced exchanges and mutual understanding, and ultimately contribution to a harmonious green earth.
NYIT President Doctor Edward Guiliano said in his speech that through cooperating with NUPT, NYIT has been able to share with the Chinese educational community more research results and practical experiences. He went on to say that the old thinking mode needs to be broken and education should figure more heavily than governments, enterprises and labs in this green campaign. He concluded that we shall strive to accomplish our mission through extensive cooperation, creativity and enterprise.
Deputy Director of Jiangsu Department of Education gave his congratulations in his speech. He hoped for more inter-university cooperation in the future to spark up technological creativity that would make contributions to the green campaign. Vice Chairman of Jiangsu Economic and Infomatization Commission Mr. Zhang Fang emphasized in his speech that it is our responsibility and mission to take care of our earth. He believed that the forum would lead to new thoughts on the role of energy and education in the green campaign and new measures in this regard.
Lady Barbara Judge and Mr. Martin Shane Paul said in their speeches that the forum will enhance mutual understanding between the two countries of each other s culture and thinking mode, and that the cooperation between the two universities has laid a solid foundation for addressing future difficulties in this area. They wished for bigger success for future cooperation between the two sides in environment protection.
The two-day event witnessed 37 key-note speeches delivered by leading experts in various areas. The topics included climate, energy, sustainable development, low-carbon, green buildings, new-generation fuels and green information, etc. Revolving around environmental protection, participants discussed challenges, opportunities as well as innovations in science and technology, higher education, industry and finance. They specifically discussed climate changes and possible solutions to them, research and development of green technologies, and the important role of educational innovations in energy conservation and environment protection.
The Green Imagination Forum will with no doubt exert positive influence on the global green economy and further strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in environment, energy and education. Experts and scholars are calling upon the public to enhance their environmental awareness and hoping for more young people to play a role in the green campaign.
