Supported by a grant of international academic exchange from JinanUniversity, professor Asit Mazumder from Victoria University of Canada was invited to visit Institute of Hydrobiology from June 5 to June 20 of 2010. Prof. Asit Mazumder is one of major limnologists in limnological school of MacGill, made a significant contribution to top-down and bottom-up effects in ecosystem. He was awarded Lindeman award of ecology for excellent young ecologists. His finding of temperature reduction from cynaobactreial blooms in lakes has been widely confirmed and cited as a classical result. Last ten year, he tried to link limnology with water resource managemen.

Prof. Asit Mazumdergave four lectures of food webs and their response to nutrients to young scientists and graduate students in the institute of Hydrobiology: (1) Nutrients, eutrophication, water quality and harmful algae: Implications for ecosystem and human health; (2) Foodweb concepts, theories and models and scale of experimental approaches ; (3) Fate and transport of contaminants in aquatic foodwebs: links to human foodchain and health ; (4) Nutrient foodweb dynamics: implications for water, aquatic ecosystem and fisheries management. He also was invited to visit Management commiitte of Pearl River system, and give a special lecture to talk about: Challenges of Sustaining Clean and healthy Water Under Changing Climate and Landuse. In his lectures, Prof. Asit Mazumder always showed how to link distantly small biological action to large scale effects to know that disturbance to ecosystems can be spread far beyond our prediction. He visited the field station for reservoir limnology in Liuxihe reservoir, and large scaled enclosures for biomanipulation experiment, where he suggested ecosystem response to nutrients and adding fish can be traced by isotope analysis. PhD candidate Wei Hou benefited from his lectures and discussion to improve her research for thesis.
