The 2006 Youngsters of Overseas Chinese Origins Winter Camp Opens

More than 340 youngsters of overseas Chinese Origins from 11 countries of 4 continents arrived at Jinan University---- the Paramount University for overseas Chinese--- to attend the 2006 Youngsters of Overseas Chinese Origins Winter Camp of Chinese National Dance and Martial Art on December 20. They have come from Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Fiji, Panama, Peru, Chile, Mauritius, Madagascar, South Africa and Thailand etc.

The winter camp, which was held jointly by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council (the initiator of the event), China Overseas Exchanges Association and Jinan University, will last about half a month, where the campers can develop interests in the Chinese language and Chinese culture.

In the 20 days from December 20, 2006 to January, all the kids, who range from 12 to 18 years old are divided into several class. The activities are abundant for all these campers, such as courses of the basic knowledge of Chinese national dance, Chinese Martial and of the facture of Chinese handcraft given by teachers of Jinan University, lectures on Chinese geography, Chinese History, Chinese Culture.

Also, they can experience the charm of Chinese Culture from song-singing, movie, puppet show, and the exchange activities with Chinese students on geography, history and culture. Still, they will be able to have tour in Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen----the economic booming cities in southern part of China to have firsthand experience of the Chinese culture and its charm.

On the opening ceremony of the winter camp held on December 21, Mr Liu Hui, director of the propaganda office of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office extended his warmest welcome to all the campers. He said that the Chinese Government always attached much importance to the overseas Chinese affairs, and was always concerned with the subsistence of overseas Chinese.

As an operating department of the Chinese government that is in charge of the overseas Chinese affairs, the Office has long been committed to protecting the legal rights and interests of the overseas Chinese, and to the spreading of Chinese culture and the development of Chinese language education in overseas Chinese communities.

The overseas Chinese youngsters is the future and hope of the overseas Chinese communities , said Mr. Liu to every campers no matter how far are you away from your country of origin, no matter what your nationality is, you are still the descent of Chinese, and your root is always in China and Along with the development of Chinese economics and a recent Chinese Culture upsurge, the importance of Chinese Language has become popular internationally and tends to become an important tool in international communication and exchange .

He hoped that every camper could cherish this opportunity and exert themselves to learn the Chinese Language, which is more than a language but a tool that will help them to have better communication of the people of the Chinese nation and will help them to develop deeper understandings to the profound culture of China and to develop pride and self-recognition of being a Chinese, a tool that offers a larger space for personal development.
