President of SYSU: University Students Need to Load Up!
Guangzhou, January 14, 2010 (Information Times): University students need to load up! Yesterday afternoon, to carry out the spirit of the sixth plenary of eleventh session of Provincial Party Committee, a symposium for Guangdong higher education institutes took place in Guangzhou. Presidents from many key universities including Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology as well as Jinan University, presented sharp views on the current status of university s sci-tech innovation.
University students should load up! was a surprising remark made by Huang Daren, President of SYSU. In his opinion, the crucial point to cultivate innovative talents lies in classroom teaching. Our students need to complete 155 credits while some famous foreign universities require only 100-120 credits. However, we feel pretty at ease while foreign students find it rather intense. The main reason is that our classroom teaching is not quality centered. He suggested students doing more reading.
President Huang pointed out that inland universities often refer to the numbers of master, doctor units and Cheung Kong Scholars when presenting themselves, using phrases that will only be understood among inland universities. As for foreign universities, what they often emphasize is the philosophy of education . As an academic entity, a university should prioritize the philosophy of education by fostering modern people with leader temperament. Our education goal is clear, that is to treat students fairly . The University should provide students with best teachers and excellent lessons. Remember that the key to cultivate innovative talents is to carry out high-quality classroom teaching.
