Presidential Delegation from University of Glasgow Visit Tianjin University

On March 3^rd, a delegation from University of Glasgow, headed by Principal Anton Muscatelli and Vice Principal John Chapman, visited Tianjin University. President Jiajun Li and Executive Vice Party Secretary Xianjin Yang met with the guests. Heads from Office of Science & Technology, International Cooperation Office, School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronic Engineering, School of Information Technology and Engineering together with faculty representatives from other relevant schools attended the meeting.

President Li extended warm welcome to the guests. He gave an overall introduction to the current development of Tianjin University. He expressed his hope to establish long-term mechanism of regular exchange of visits among faculty members between the two universities, and extended an invitation to related professors of University of Glasgow to attend an international workshop in the field of biomedical engineering to be held in June this year in Tianjin. Principal Anton Muscatelli showed appreciation to President Li for his hospitality, and talked about the discipline restructuring undertaken within University of Glasgow. He agreed with President Li for promoting faculty and student exchanges between the two universities. At a separate meeting between Vice Principal John Chapman and Executive Vice Party Secretary Xianjin Yang, both sides expressed wishes for more intensive exchange and cooperation in the two universities.

Later on, a detailed discussion was held among the delegation from University of Glasgow, Glasgow students studying at Tianjin University and representatives from related schools and administrative departments of Tianjin University on possible student exchange programs. The delegation also gave a presentation to TU students on studying in Scotland.

Established in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the second oldest university in Scotland and the fourth oldest in UK. It is also leading in the world of academia. In recent decades, 7 faculty members from the University of Glasgow won Nobel Prizes. The University now includes four colleges: College of Arts, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, College of Science and Engineering and College of Social Sciences. In World University Rankings 2010 done by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Glasgow ranked 151-200, and its Medicine ranked 51-57. And in the latest U.S.News & World Report's World's Best Universities Rankings, University of Glasgow ranked 77.
