Anvil Knitwear, the sixth-largest purchaser of organic cotton worldwide, launched a t-shirt that uses less energy and water during production, has a net zero carbon footprint and is made from 69 percent pre-consumer recycled cotton.
"Our ongoing commitment to reducing energy and waste at our operations inspired us to develop a use for textile cuttings that would otherwise be discarded in the manufacturing process or sold as scrap. The AnvilRecycled tee is the result," said Anthony Corsano, CEO, Anvil Knitwear.
"When you make a t-shirt - or any other product - you use electricity, fuel and water, and you create waste. Our recycled tee is an innovative, affordable product that has less impact on the environment, reuses leftover materials that most apparel makers see as waste, and avoids the dyeing process saving significant amounts of energy and resources."
The AnvilRecycled t-shirt is Certified CarbonFree by Carbonfund.org, the leading nonprofit carbon offset and climate solutions organization.
To meet rigorous standards of the CarbonFree Product Certification Program, Anvil assessed the carbon footprint of the recycled tee throughout its lifecycle, from raw materials sourcing, manufacturing and transportation to screen printing, consumer use and disposal. Anvil made the tee carbon-neutral by reducing emissions during the production process and by offsetting emissions.
"Even in these challenging economic times, the demand for environmentally-friendly products has never been stronger," continued Anthony Corsano. "Certainly the AnvilRecycled tee is a reflection of who we are as a company, but there is an equally strong business reason for developing this t-shirt - our customers are asking for it and products like it."
In honor of Earth Day, Anvil, in partnership with the Sierra Club and Carbonfund.org, has donated over 6,000 AnvilRecycled and approximately 1,500 AnvilOrganic tees to schools, universities and environmental organizations to promote environmental awareness. The AnvilRecycled short sleeve tees are available in sizes XS to 4XL, and nine colors: recycled black, recycled green, recycled heather, recycled sand, recycled red, recycled brown, recycled navy, recycled blue and recycled charcoal. The AnvilRecycled tee is available from leading distributors of Anvil products.
