India : Coir exports reach an all-time high

Identification of new user areas for utilization of coir and coir waste (Coir Pith), modernization of production infrastructure for elimination of drudgery in manual operation and thereby attaining higher productivity and improvement in quality are integral parts of the research efforts.
Coir Board has been awarded the prestigious National Research & Development Corporation (NRDC) Technology Awards thrice for innovation in 1992, 2002 and 2004. Development of “Pithplus”, for composting coir pith, “Coirret”, for speeding up the retting process, coir plywood, “Anugraha”, the compact metallic loom for weaving coir geotextiles, Anupam loom with inbuilt provision for providing training in weaving to woman artisans are a few of the achievements of the Board.
Domestic Market Promotion:
Development of domestic market for Coir and Coir products is as important as development of export market. The Board has been undertaking various activities including participation in major domestic exhibitions, providing Market Development Assistance to promote sales through co-operative societies, public sector undertakings etc. During 2006-07, Coir Board participated in 67 exhibitions in India.
Export:
The Coir and Coir products are exported to more than 80 countries all over the world. Major importing countries of the product are USA, U.K., Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Australia, Spain etc.
The export of Coir and Coir products has reached an all time high record of 168755 tonnes and Rs.605.17 crore during 2006-07 as compared to 136027 tonnes and Rs.508.45 crore during 2005-06. The export value realization during 2006-07 surpassed the target set forth at Rs.130 million US Dollars.
