The Australian wool market finished 1.9% higher, on average, at sales in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.
The AWEX EMI rose by 10¢ (+1.1%), ending the week at 935¢/kg. This reflected increases of 12¢ (+1.3%) in the North and 8¢ (+0.9%) in the South, with their corresponding Regional Indicators finishing the week at 959¢ and 915¢ clean, respectively. The Western Indicator rose by 33¢ (+3.6%), finishing the week at 940¢. Note, Fremantle did not sell on Thursday, when the EMI eased by 9¢.
In a three day sale in Newcastle and a two day sale in Melbourne, the AWEX EMI rose by 8¢ on Tuesday, by 11¢ on Wednesday and fell by 9¢ on Thursday. The Western Indicator rose by 33¢ on Wednesday in a one day sale in Fremantle.
42,840 bales were on offer, compared with 36,442 bales last week, of which 7.0% were passed in, comprised of 4.3% in Newcastle, 5.9% in Melbourne and 15.4% in Fremantle. Pass-in rates for Merino fleece and skirtings were 8.8% and 2.9%, respectively. 1,399 bales (3.2%) were withdrawn prior to sale and re-offered bales made up 10.9% of this week's offering.
In a week of further volatility on global financial and share markets since last Thursday, the US exchange rate (source RBA) was 0.98¢ lower on Monday when compared with Thursday of last week. It was up by 0.84¢ on Tuesday, down by 0.32¢ on Wednesday and up by 1.39¢ on Thursday to close at 81.50¢, up 0.93¢ (+1.2%) since the last sale.
The exchange rate against the Euro rose by 0.13 Euro cents (+0.2%) to close at 60.15 Euro cents on Thursday night. When looked at in other currencies, the AWEX EMI increased by 17¢ (+2.3%) in US terms and by 7¢ (+1.3%) in Euro terms when compared with the previous sale.
