Jun 24, 2010 - Citing the Bhopal gas leak case, a prominent environmental organisation from Orissa on Wednesday demanded that compensation claims be filed against Tata Refractories for releasing poisonous chemicals outside their factory premises three years ago.
The Wildlife Society of Orissa headed by environmentalist Biswajit Mohanty in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanded that the government file criminal proceedings against the directors of the company for criminal negligence which has led to discharge of extremely harmful chemicals like hydrogen cyanide(Prussic Acid) and phenol into the drinking water sources of the nearby villages.
Tata Refractories Ltd at Belpahar area in western Orissa district of Jharsuguda had discharged untreated effluents into the surrounding agricultural fields and water channels causing damage to the standing kharif crops in 2006-07. The company manufactures heat-resistant bricks for blast furnace. Mohanty, got access to the details of the toxic discharge through RTI applications.
He alleged that though government agencies have gathered sufficient evidence against the company management, they have not instituted criminal proceeding against the full- time directors of the company.
