Nov. 1, 2010 - South African diversified miner Exxaro said on Monday it will lose 9,000 tonnes per month in slag production after shutting down Furnace 2 at its Kwazulu Natal mineral sands unit following an incident (occurred on 24 October 2010.).
The company said in a statement that initial assessments indicated that the incident, which occurred last week, was due to a 'burn-through on the furnace shell during the metal tap process.'
"(We expect a ) loss of around 9,000 tonnes of slag per month and we should be down for 3 months," Exxaro's financial director Win de Klerk said.
Mineral sands contain titanium minerals and zicorn.
