Nov. 19, 2010 - U.S. Silica Co. will be moving its corporate headquarters to Frederick's Riverside Corporate Park.
The move was announced Thursday by the Frederick Department of Economic Development.
"Obviously, this is an example of a great company taking advantage of opportunities for the type of work force they're looking for in the Frederick area," said Richard Griffin, economic development director. "We're incredibly happy to have them as corporate citizens in Frederick County."
U.S. Silica will locate in Riverside Five, a 126,151-square-foot office building in a 4.5-acre amenity park at 8490 Progress Drive. The site is to the city's northeast, close to Monocacy Boulevard, and abuts the Riverside Research Park.
The operation was formed in the late 1880s, according to an economic development newsletter. In 1987, Pennsylvania Glass Sand and Ottowa Silica Co. merged to form U.S. Silica Co.
Company Chief Executive Officer John Ulizio was traveling out of state and could not immediately be contacted for comment.
U.S. Silica has grown to an organization with more than 650 employees, and has 13 operations in 13 states, including mining, processing and selling industrial sand and ground silica, aplite (feldspar) and kaolin clay.
The company's headquarters is listed as Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
