Siemens VAI to expand ArcelorMittal Monlevade LD Steel Works in Brazil

Feb. 15, 2011 - Siemens VAI received an order from ArcelorMittal Monlevade SA to supply core components for the expansion of the Joao Monlevade steel mill located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The order includes equipment for an LD converter, the hot metal supply and the associated secondary dust cleaning systems. This project has a total value of more than EUR 20 million, and is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
In the course of this program both of the existing 130 tonne LD (BOF) converter plants will be equipped for parallel operation-Siemens VAI will design and supply the hot metal desulphurization station, ladles, des lagging stands, the ladle and slag pot transfer cars, and the associated electrical and automation equipment. The material feeding system will be expanded, and its alloying capacity doubled.
The scope of supply also includes two secondary dust cleaning systems with cleaning capacities of 800,000 and 1,000,000 cubic meters per hour respectively. Off gas from hot metal desulphurization, the converters, the hot metal supply and secondary steel refining will be cleaned.
ArcelorMittal Monlevade, part of the ArcelorMittal Long Carbon Americas Division, is a long product manufacturer with a production capacity of about 1.2 million tonnes of crude steel per year.
The company is currently carrying out a comprehensive expansion program which will double capacities throughout the entire process chain.
