The Department of Water and Agriculture started a new non-chemical control system on a disease known as "taladro del ma? az" (Ostrinia nubilaris) in some 650 hectares of cultivation in the greenhouse peppers producing area.
It's an experimental campaign of big scale in which the main cooperatives and companies producing peppers will participate. Its representatives were called by the Department to a meeting on 26th of January to talk about the technical aspects of this experiment.
The general manager of Exploration Modernization and Agricultural Capacitance, ngel Garca Lidn, underlined that the disease is "an emerging one in the last campaigns and it's bringing problems to pepper cultivations in greenhouses, as a consequence of suppression of chemical application of insecticides."
The Vegetable Health Service of the Department made, in the last years, some pertinent attempts to make this new system, based on sexual confusion, ready. It works by the placing of some diffusers that emit a pheromone that incapacitates male's ability to locate females, so makes fertilisation impossible.
The meeting with producers is about the correct placing of diffusers in greenhouses, so this treatment becomes more effective. On their part, the Department, will take in hand a rigorous control of the process so they can obtain the necessary technical information.
