The canning of fruit and vegetables in the province of Almeria, in 338 commercial operations, exported more than 6,000 tons of fruits and vegetables between January and October 2010. The value of these sales, according to the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute, exceeded 7.4 million euros, 34.4% more than the same period last year. Compared to the turnover of fruits and vegetables, the export volume of canned fruit and vegetables is small, although the processed sector V range is taking significant steps, and is in twelfth place in the provincial export value, with 0.5% of total sales abroad. In the Spanish context, Almera holds the seventeenth place with 0.6% of the value of exports.
The United States is the largest customer of canned fruit and vegetables from Almera. Between January and October 2010, the country bought products worth 1.8 million euros, followed by the French, Canadians and Italians. The French are the second most customers by 21 percent, followed by Canada (eight percent) and Italians (6.5 percent).
