Weekly average prices in the UK for potatoes rose by 3.60 to 166.45/t (198) last week, recovering from the dip of the previous week. The free market average rose by 4.32 to 186.72/t (222).
Due to last week's Fruit Logistica in Berlin export demand was quieter, prices for supplies to Russia are easing slightly to 140-160/t (167/190), with top values mainly for Red varieties. Movement was also slower last week due to a back log at ports in Russia, further demand is expected once the back log is cleared. Domestic (retail) prices in Russia fell slightly as meditereanen imports increase, particularly from Egypt. Trade with the Canary Island is steady and sales to Spain are improving with M Piper making 165/t (196).
In the south of the UK planting is estimated to be 10 days ahead of last year. Rain put an end to planting in Cornwall last week, although 450 ha have been completed. In the east heavy rain and flooding was reported in the northern areas, growers in the south east may be able to plant small amounts this week weather permitting.
In the west a few acres have been planted but has all been interrupted by rain and further planting this week is dependent on the weather.
There was little activity in Scotland last week due to snow and the land remains cold and wet. Nevertheless planting is still ahead of schedule, which up to 11th February was estimated at 458 ha, compared with 258 ha last year, 200 ha in 2009, 780 ha in 2008 and 820 ha in 2007.
