At 3 pm on Jan 22th, 2010, Top 10, Journalist for Silk Air magazine (a global top ten airline company) came to the Chengdu Panda Base to interview Dr. Zhang Zhihe, director of the Panda Base and a giant panda expert.
At first, the two discussed the developmental history of the panda base and progress of giant panda conservation works. As per Dr. Zhang's introduction, the Chengdu Panda Base was established in March 1987 and is supported by the Chengdu government, which is approved by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, CAZG CWCA, and Sichuan government at all levels. The reason for the base was to establish an ex-situ conservation base for giant pandas which focuses on captive management, breeding, disease prevention, scientific research, and conservation. The base is also one of the government s the main research centers for endangered species ex-situ conservation. Through the work hard of the base staff, the captive population at the panda base has increased from 6 to 87 individuals (still the largest captive panda population in the world). Afterwards, Dr. Zhang introduced the current situation of giant panda conservation, and encouraged compassion in the public from all circles to support and promote giant panda conservation.
In the state key laboratory, reporters interviewed researcher Hou Rong--a famous giant panda expert, who's also the deputy to the National People's Congress and the director of the research center. After that, the reporters interviewed keepers in charge of panda breeding for further information.
As far as we know, this interview will be published in monograph form at which point over 16 million people will learn about the current status of giant pandas.
