On June 8, 2010, press conference announcing the naming contest for the pandas to be given to Macau was held at the Seac Pai Van Park, the future site of a giant panda education center. Chen Limin, secretary of the Secretariat for Administration and Justice, president Tan Weiwen and member Ma Jinqiang of the Board of Control of the Civic Municipal Council and many media were invited to attend. From June 8 to July 5, only people holding a valid Macau Identity Card can join in the naming activity via posting the naming form and sending emails. The names will be decided by a committee of judges and votes from citizens. The Municipalities of Macau plan to announce the names to the public at the end of August. Chengdu Panda Base experts from panda Qi Miao and Shu Xiang s homeland will join in the judging.

Qi Miao and Shu Xiang are the panda s pet names. Qi Miao is one of two twins who were the first born after the Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008. The name Qi Miao means life is miracle and wonderful. And Shu Xiang was born the year of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 as the Xiang Yun torch was arriving in Sichuan. So the name Shu Xiang was chosen from the torch.
Along with providing names for the two pandas, it will attract more attention and concern for giant pandas. A fever for giant pandas is spreading in Macau.
