Transfer Window Closes with a Whimper in Spain

Whilst the English Premier League went into overdrive with the big money signings of Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez confirmed by Chelsea and Liverpool, Spanish clubs were more reserved in their spending on the last day clubs could bring new players in before the end of the season.

With FC Barcelona and Real Madrid having done their business earlier in the transfer window with the arrivals of Ibrahima Affelay and Emanuel Adebayor, other clubs were left to move the market with only new arrivals during the last day of trading.

The biggest name player to arrive is former Barcelona youngster Giovani Dos Santos, who joins Racing Santander on loan from Tottenham Hotspurs. Racing will hope the arrival of the Mexican international will dilute the disappointment of their failure to land Nikola Zigic.

Zaragoza signed Paraguayan international Paulo Da Silva from Sunderland, while Ecuadorian winger, Jefferson Moreno, joined Levante on loan from nearby Villarreal.

Finally Deportivo la Coruna moved to solve their problems in front of goal with three signings. Xisco returns to the club from Newcastle United and is joined by Javier Peral 'Javito' and Argentinean forward Jose Sand, who join from Aris Thessaloniki and Al Ain.

Overall January saw the majority of Spain's clubs take advantage of the opportunity to make signings with only Getafe, Hercules and Espanyol not bringing in any new players.
