Construction Commenced for Diverting Water from the Yangtze River to Han River of the South-North Water Transfer Project Largest Canal Project in Contemporary China

The largest canal project in today s China, diverting water from the Yangtze River to Han River of the South-North Water Transfer Project undertaken by CGGC, broke ground on March 26, 2010. Luo Qingquan and Li Hongzhong, both leaders of Hubei Province, Zhang Jiyao and Zhang Ye, respectively Director and Deputy Director of Office of the South-North Water Diversion Project Construction Committee of the State Council, attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Also present were CGGC officials.

This project is to draw water from Jingjiang Section of Yangtze River to Xinglong Section of Han River. The channel for the project starts from the left bank of Yangtze River at Longzhou Dike, Jingzhou City, crosses the Jingjiang Dike in the northeast, then run northwards through Hanjiang Main Dike, and joins Han River at Gaoshibei Town, Qianjiang City, with a total length of 67.23km. CGGC won the bid to undertake metal structure and civil works for pumping stations for flow-in section and flow-in check gates, and electromechanical installation, with a contract value of RMB195 million. The construction includes civil works and metal structure for pumping stations and flow-in check gates, supporting channels, electromechanical installation, burying of monitoring instruments, construction-period observation and temporary buildings, spanning 33 months as planned. This is the fifth project CGGC engaged since its participation in the South-North Water Transfer Project.
The groundbreaking ceremony is chaired by Tian Chengzhong, Vice Governor of Hubei Province. Leaders of the province and local governments addressed and expressed great expectations for CGGC, a famous enterprise with glorious tradition. They believed the iron hydropower team would complete the project with high quality and efficiency without letting down Hubei people.
The commencement of the construction is of enormous significance for accelerating the South-North Water Transfer Project, boosting the comprehensive improvement of middle and lower reaches of the Han River, and promoting the sustainable socioeconomic development in the region and Hubei Province.
