The Second China Frontiers of Engineering Symposium for Earlier Career Engineers Held in Beijing

To improve the level of China engineering and technology, learn and know of international engineering cutting-edge technology, promote the level of China academic communication with the international scientific and technological circles of engineering, and provide the platforms of international academic communication for China earlier career engineers, the second China Frontiers of Engineering Symposium for Earlier Career Engineers (China FOE) , which was hosted by Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was held on Sept. 17th, 2010 at the headquarter of CAE in Beijing.

Approximately 120 earlier career engineers from China, including the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, gathered for the symposium. Their specialties were all centered upon the four rapidly developed fields: Wireless Technology, Bio-inspired Engineering, Engineering of Advanced Vehicle and Mobility and Ocean Engineering. They gave their academic presentations, discussed heatedly and communicated with one another in fluent and sterling English.

The opening ceremony of the symposium was chaired by Prof. Zhong Zhihua, Member of CAE and president of Hunan University. Prof. Zhou Ji, president of CAE and Prof. Xu Kua-ngdi, Honorary Chairman of the Fifth Govern-ing Board of CAE delivered their addresses at the opening ceremony. More than 30 senior experts, including CAE Members, were invited to assess every presentation.

In his wonderful address, Prof. Zhou Ji, President of CAE, pointed out that The meet-ing of this kind will be gradually formed into a mechanism. We shall hold China Young Engi-neer Symposium on Frontiers of Engineering periodically. With the determination to make it into high-level and series of events, we shall go all out to enable the symposium to lead the frontiers of engineering.

These series of meet-ings are aimed to explore the trend of engi-neering and technological sciences and to dis-cuss issues on frontiers related to the develop-ment of engineering and technological sciences. Simultaneously, the series of meetings are ex-pected to cultivate young engineers, who come from industry, academia, and government na-tionwide, by giving them a platform to build up their capacity in international academic ex-change and cooperation.

Prof. Xu Kuangdi, former Vice Chairman of CPPCC National Committee, and Honorary Chairman of the Fifth Governing Board of CAE hoped in his humorous speech that China earlier career engineers sprang up in large numbers so that the team of the engineering and technology was more and more vibrant and expanded the strengths of CAE, and hoped that the symposium could further extend from the bi-lateral cooperation between CAE and US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) into cooperation and communication between CAE and other international organizations of engi-neering and technology.

After the brief opening ceremony, the symposium was divided into four sessions which were entitled Wireless Technology, Bio-inspired Technology, Technology of Ad-vanced Vehicle and Mobility, and Ocean Technology. All academic presentations were given in these four sessions.

The organization and realization of China FOE, one of the cooperative projects between CAE and NAE, would set the stage for the bi-lateral academic communications co-organized by CAE and NAE, and paved the way for CAE to cooperate with other organiza-tions of engineering and technology all over the world.
