NPU's Team Wins Best Drawing Award in Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Challenge Contest

The finals of the earthquake-resistant building design challenge contest for undergraduates, which is sponsored by Bristol University and the British Council, was held at Tongji University on Nov. 27, 2010. The Design Future team made up of Huang Jie, Zhu Yandi, Zhang Weiping, Ma Liming, Zhong Qiuying, undergraduates from School of Mechanics, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Hou Rui, an undergraduate from School of Humanities, Economics and Law, win the best drawing award.

Under the tutorship of Professor Liu Yu from Department of Architecture, the Design Future team is required by the sponsors to design a hospital located at the area susceptible to earthquakes. The whole design includes architectural planning and design, structural seismic design, cost control and the simulation of actual project competitive bidding etc. The Design Future team wins the first place and becomes one of the top 15 teams through video pictures, Internet voting, micro-blog match, on-line discussions with the British experts and posters.

The earthquake-resistant building design challenge contest is under the auspices of Bristol University the British Engineering and Natural Science Research Committee and the British Engineering and Physics Research Council. During the previous years, it has been held in India, South Korea and Taiwan. This is the first time the contest has been held in China, and English is used in the whole process. The contest requires every team to be creative, make itself understood and solve complicated problems and cooperate in teams.
