Constructed by China Railway Holding Co., Ltd., Mekkah metro project finished on schedule on Nov. 13, 2010 and started formal operation for hajj pilgrims on Nov. 14, 2010. The real capacity of transportation is 36000-40000person-time/hour. It is estimated the maximum capacity will reach 54000person-time/hour.
Mekkah metro project is the biggest project undertaken by Chinese contractor in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and it is also the biggest bilateral cooperation project under the agreement between Chinese government and Saudi government signed in 2008.
