IHB Professor and His Doctoral Student Attend Two International Meetings in the U.S.

IHB Prof. Songguang XIE and his doctoral student Wenping HE from the Research Group of Environmental Biology of Fishes went to attend the 4th International Otolith Symposium and the 139th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society in the United States during Aug. 22 and Sept. 9.

The 4th International Otolith Symposium was held in Monterey, California in Aug. 22 to 28. About 268 representatives from 36 countries and regions took part in this symposium. Five themes were featured in the symposium program: 1. age and growth; 2. physiology; 3. chemistry and structure; 4. sclerochronology and the environment; and 5. life history and fishery management.

Prof. Xie and his doctoral student made oral presentations respectively at the symposium. Prof. Xie also chaired the specific workshop whose theme is life history and fishery management on the morning of Aug. 26.

The International Otolith Symposium is held every five or six year. Previous symposia were held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA (1993); Bergen, Norway (1998); and Townsville, Australia (2004). The 5th International Otolith Symposium will be held in Spain in 2014.

Prof. Xie and his doctoral student also attended the 139th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Nashville, Tennessee, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, and exhibited posters on the research achievements of their research group. After the meeting, they visited Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and communicated with Prof. Brian R. Murphy, Director and Professor of Fisheries Science of Virginia Tech. They discussed on some topics related to fisheries research, collaborative proposals and publications.
