Since Sept 30, Hainan has suffered continuous downpours, causing many rivers to swell and leading to floods in some areas. The length, the intensity, the amount of the rainfall and the severity of its damage all marked the flooding the worst in decades.
On Oct. 8th, the rainstorm has lasted for 8 days, the longest in the last 50 years. Altogether16 cities and counties have been battered and 1.6 million local residents have been affected. More than 210,000 people had been evacuated after about 1,160 villages were submerged by floodwaters. Rain-triggered landslide hit parts of the island, the water in the Jiaji section of Wanquan River went beyond the warning level, and 30 reservoirs in Haikou had to open a sluice to release floodwater.
