Shenzhen Special Day, held at the World Expo in Shanghai on July 29, attracted thousands of visitors as the city was one of 46 from around the globe invited by the World Expo to stage a special day-long event.
The event featured a series of performances including singing, dancing, magic shows, martial arts and opera. The event was aimed at showing the world the young, modern, multi-dimensional elements that make Shenzhen so dynamic, Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin said at a ceremony at the Baogang Stage.
More than 400 artists from Shenzhen gave performances, including the Shenzhen Orchestra, Shenzhen Senior High School students and Shenzhen Daweiwu Dance Troupe.
"I liked the 'Nanhai Oyster Girls' dance," said Zhou Pengfeng, a visitor from Heilongjiang Province. "We can see from the dance how the girls raise oysters at sea and how their lives are. It is a unique Guangdong tradition," she said.
Three dance performances and one photo exhibition, titled Transformation of the Pearl River Delta, were also staged during Guangdong Week, said Zhang Jinwen, director of the bureau.
Guangdong Party chief Wang Yang and Mayor Xu Qin visited the Guangdong and Shenzhen pavilions at the World Expo as they invited visitors to come and experience the unique cultural elements and traditions of Guangdong and Shenzhen.
The Shenzhen Pavilion has the world's largest-ever replica of the Mona Lisa, completed by 570 artists from the city's Dafen Oil Painting Village in Longgang District. Promotional activities for the 26th Universiade, to be held in Shenzhen in 2011, are also being held.
So far, the World Expo had attracted more than 34 million visitors from home and abroad since its opening. Nearly 420,000 people attended the Expo on Thursday.
